Alicia Ward - 2008 YBPS PRIDE OF BARBADOS
SCHOLARSHIP WINNER
It is an honour to be one of the first Barbadians to be awarded a Young Barbadian
Professionals Society (YBPS) Scholarship and I am very proud to add this to
my small but growing list of achievements.
Hailing from Wildey St. Michael, I began my primary school education at the
Grantley Prescod Memorial Primary School, formerly known as the Pine Primary
School. It was here that those first crucial lessons of dedication and hard
work were instilled in me and hence began my academic development. Throughout
my primary school years I was able to maintain good social and academic standing
and was therefore entrusted with the task of being a prefect and ultimately
the Head Girl the following year. This is one of my first achievements of
which I am very proud. Then came the most stressful time of those juvenile
years; Common Entrance Examinations. After months of preparation and after-school
lessons, the hard work paid off. I was awarded valedictorian of my year and
gained entry to the prestigious Queen’s College School.
The transition from primary to secondary level was somewhat challenging in
terms of adjusting to concurrently studying thirteen subjects instead of the
previous five. However, with the support of my family and new teachers, I
continued to work diligently. As a result, in my fifth year after the CXC
Examinations, I was rewarded with five grade ones and three grade twos. I
then decided to continue to sixth form because the ‘QC life’ was like no other,
and I was once again given the task of becoming a prefect. Those last two
years at Queen’s College were unforgettable. Despite the fun we all had, it
was incomparable to the tension and stress of CAPE Exams. I must admit that
those exams required a great deal of prayer, but it was all worth it because
in the end I was rewarded with my biggest achievement to date; a Barbados
Scholarship.
Now I am in Medical School in Trinidad and Tobago and I can proudly add my
YBPS Scholarship to my list of achievements. Next step, becoming a certified
doctor!!!!
